danny gloverIn 1993, Alma Randolph established the Alma Randolph Charitable Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides back-to-school clothing for children in need in Owensboro-Daviess County. The program aims to enhance each child’s self-esteem and allows them to return to school with dignity, and ready to focus on learning. Referrals are submitted by the area homeless shelters, youth centers, and the city and county school systems. Each child that is selected to participate in the annual shopping project receives a voucher to purchase new clothing and shoes for the school year. The Alma Randolph Charitable Foundation has raised $1,152,593 (net) and provided new clothing and shoes for 15,130 children since 1993. The annual fall shopping event is funded through sponsors, individual donations and fundraisers. This year, the annual fall shopping event will take place during fall break in October. All net proceeds from An Evening with Danny Glover will go to this special day for these children. As their motto reads, “Our Mission is Here,” referring to the Owensboro-Daviess County area.

Alma Randolph has a special bond with these children. The foundation does not receive any city, county, state, or federal funding, and is also not a United Way agency. The foundation is, “truly an act of love,” as described by Alma herself. Alma Randolph attended Brescia University. She was elected as Beaver Dam City Commissioner when she was just twenty-four years old, and was the first woman and the first African American to hold elected office in Ohio Country. Also, she was inducted among the first three women, and the first African American to be admitted to the Owensboro Rotary Club.

“After reading about the wonderful work the Alma Randolph Charitable Foundation is doing in Owensboro, Kentucky,” Glover remarks in the Messenger-Inquirer, “it was not a difficult decision for me to agree to accept the invitation to be the Keynote Speaker for their fundraising event.”
