Step into the DESIGN STUDIO with Amelia Laster, AKBD
Every Jagoe Homeowner has the unique opportunity to personalize their home with modern and stylish fixtures.
More people are now selecting BLACK fixtures over Oil Rubbed Bronze to create a more sleek design in their home.
A few years ago at the International Builder Show, I attended a seminar with trends to watch, and it was then that they forecasted that bronze was on the way out. Over the last year with manufacturers streamlining production due to raw material shortages and shipping issues, we’ve seen bronze gradually being phased out of product lines, including those that we use as a standard in Jagoe Homes.
Recently we brought on our Design Coordinator Team and next month we will be opening our first “Design Studio at Jagoe Homes” in order to elevate the Personalization Process. We’ll be debuting an entire new product line for homeowners, professionally curated by style and finish, so now is the perfect time to introduce new products and finishes!
In the 90’s, home trends evolved from country blue, dusty rose, and shiny brass to warm neutrals, Tuscan influences, and Bronze. Bronze provided a warm, easy to clean finish and many of the bronze pieces were ornate in design. Gradually bronze morphed from a dark coppery finish with hints of gold (Venetian Bronze) to a darker, matte finish (Oil Rubbed Bronze), which could often be mistaken for black. A downside to bronze is every manufacturer has their own version, which can make coordinating the finishes in your home difficult.
Black fixtures even look good with blue! Amelia used this style in our Model Home in Turnberry at Berkshire in Newburgh, Indiana.
Black is the answer to a natural progression in finishes. Tuscan influence waned and industrial vibes started moving in, so bronze adapted and became darker and more modern. As other trends became popular (farmhouse, a modern take on mid century, etc…) black became a popular finish choice in furniture and cabinet hardware, fueling the need for more finish availability across product lines.
Botanicals also mix well with black fixtures, like in our Model Home at The Reserve at Deer Valley in Utica, Kentucky.
A black finish gives a space a clean, modern design like our Model Home in The Legends at Bluegrass Commons in Owensboro, Kentucky.
The Model Home in Blevins Farm in Bowling Green, Kentucky incorporates the popular Modern Farmhouse design with black finishes.
Black finish is versatile in that it can be modern, farmhouse or traditional, and it doesn’t date itself. While black plumbing fixtures aren’t something that we’ve seen available in mass production, black light fixtures and cabinet hardware have been circulating for years. Most can look at a shiny brass fixture and guestimate exactly when the home was built or remodeled. The same can’t be said for black.
Jagoe Homes recently changed the Proven Performer vinyl in our homes to Luxury Vinyl Plank and our buyers are IN LOVE! It looks amazing down, it’s easy to install and repair, withstands all the chaos of daily life, it’s water resistant, and it’s INCLUDED in the majority of our Jagoe Homes.
There are two things to consider when deciding which direction to move with decor: personal preference and current trends. Even if your personal preferences aren’t in line with current trends, trends are what dictate availability, so knowing what’s out there will aid you in finding what you want and where to go. Resale is also important to consider, especially when it comes to current trends.
Black fixtures look great in the bathroom as well!

HERS® (Home Energy Rating System) INDEX
*Based on the US Department of Energy definition of HERS index of 130. This information presented for educational purposes only. Savings are average estimates based on Jagoe Homes’ top five selling plans. Savings will vary based on house type, orientation, house size, utility rates, climate and operations of the home.
The lower a home scores on RESNET’S HERS (Home Energy Rating) Index, the more energy efficient it is. A standard new home that’s built to meet the 2006 IECC will score a HERS Index of 100. New Jagoe homes score an average of 62, making them at least 38% more efficient than a standard new home and at least 68% more efficient than a used home.
