Protect Your Home! During below-freezing temperatures, take preventative measures in your home to keep your pipes from freezing.
- Maintain a steady, warm temperature on your thermostat. Do not change the temperature on your thermostat from day to night like you may in warmer temperatures.
- Open bathroom and kitchen cabinets. Often, the pipes that freeze are located near an outside wall or a window and are in an area of the home that does not receive direct sunlight. This directs warm air to cold areas in your home.
- Let cold water from exposed pipes drip. A small amount of water running through your interior pipes can prevent them from freezing.
- Keep your garage door closed. The less cold air that gets into your garage, the better, especially when there is a water supply located there.
- Install a safe space heater in your garage. In the garage, place the space heater by your tankless water heater. This will prevent freezing of your tankless water heater and pipes in the garage. It is highly recommended, even if your garage is insulated, when outside temperatures are below 20 degrees for an extended period. Ensure that the heater is not around any flammable material.
- Unhook exterior water hoses. Leaving attached water hoses in freezing temperatures will cause your pipes to burst. If you keep your hoses connected, water cannot drain out of your hose bib, leading to freezing and breaking of the device.
If your pipes do freeze, don’t panic! However, you must work to thaw them.
Detecting a frozen pipe can occur when no water comes out of the faucet upon turning it on. Therefore, it’s crucial to allow all faucets in your home to steadily drip. If you observe a lack of water flow, inspect your home for leaks, ensuring no pipes have burst. Should frozen pipes be the issue, attempt to thaw them yourself.
To thaw the pipe section, use a safe space heater, a hairdryer, a heating pad, or towels soaked in hot water. Apply heat until the water pressure is fully restored. Check all faucets to identify other potential frozen pipes.
In the case of a burst pipe with water flowing out, promptly shut off the main water valve. Contact a qualified plumber for frozen pipe repair.
Exceptional Energy Efficiency in Every Jagoe Home
An energy-efficient Jagoe Home begins with intelligent design, quality construction, and generations of working to exceed our own standards of excellence. Jagoe Homes is committed to all the practices it takes to build truly energy-efficient homes, and we work closely with RESNET (Residential Energy Services Network) to achieve great ratings from that organization.

HERS® (Home Energy Rating System) INDEX
*Based on the US Department of Energy definition of HERS index of 130. This information presented for educational purposes only. Savings are average estimates based on Jagoe Homes’ top five selling plans. Savings will vary based on house type, orientation, house size, utility rates, climate and operations of the home.
The lower a home scores on RESNET’S HERS (Home Energy Rating) Index, the more energy efficient it is. A standard new home that’s built to meet the 2006 IECC will score a HERS Index of 100. New Jagoe homes score an average of 62, making them at least 38% more efficient than a standard new home and at least 68% more efficient than a used home.
Brand-new Jagoe homes are built with nothing less than advanced materials and modern innovations engineered to reduce energy use and lower utility costs all year long. Owning a home designed with energy-saving features ensures long-lasting efficiency, exceptional comfort, and an eco-friendly carbon footprint throughout every season.
