Cedar is a timeless material that adds warmth, charm, and natural character to your home’s exterior. At Jagoe Homes, we use Sherwin-Williams Opaque Acrylic Stain on exterior cedar elements, including porch columns, headers, and gable pediments, to enhance their appearance and protect against weather and wear.
Popular floorplans that include Cedar Accents: Angelico Craftsman, Leonardo Craftsman, Monet Craftsman, Van Gogh Craftsman, Cumberland Modern, National Modern, Patriot Modern
But even with high-quality materials and protective finishes, cedar still requires regular maintenance to preserve its beauty and structural integrity over time.
How often should I clean or inspect my cedar?
Inspect and clean your cedar annually. Look for fading, mildew, or signs of water absorption to decide if maintenance or recoating is needed.

Why We Use Opaque Stain
Unlike paint, Sherwin-Williams Opaque Acrylic Stain allows the natural texture of the cedar to shine through while providing advanced protection against UV and moisture. It resists cracking and peeling and can help extend the life of your cedar when properly maintained.
Cedar Maintenance Timeline
To keep your cedar elements looking great and performing well, follow these maintenance tips:
🗓 Inspect Annually
Look for signs of fading, mildew, or water absorption. If water no longer beads on the surface, it’s time to recoat.
🔨 Check for Damage
Address any warping, splitting, or insect damage promptly to prevent more severe issues.

🧼 Annual Cedar Maintenance: Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide
Step 1: Inspect the Wood
🔍 Time needed: 15–30 minutes
- Walk around your home and check all cedar surfaces for mold, mildew, dirt, or fading.
- Look for signs of water damage, splitting, or soft areas, as these may need repair.
Step 2: Rinse with Water
🚿 Tool: Garden hose with spray nozzle
- Start by rinsing cedar with plain water to remove loose dirt, pollen, and debris.
- Avoid pressure washers unless you’re experienced, as they can damage the wood grain if too strong.
Step 3: Apply a Gentle Cleaning Solution
🧴 Recommended: 1 part oxygenated bleach (like OxiClean) + 3 parts warm water
- Mix in a garden sprayer or large bucket.
- Apply generously to the cedar using a sprayer, sponge, or soft-bristle brush.
- Let it sit for 10–15 minutes. This lifts grime and organic buildup.
Step 4: Scrub Lightly (If Needed)
🧽 Use a soft-bristle brush or broom
- Gently scrub in the direction of the wood grain, especially in shaded or mildew-prone areas.
- Don’t over-scrub! Cedar is soft and can splinter under pressure.
Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly
💧 Use clean water from the hose again
- Rinse off all cleaning residue completely. Leftover cleaner can affect stain absorption or finish.
Step 6: Let It Dry Fully
🌤️ Drying time: 24–48 hours, depending on weather
- The cedar must be completely dry before applying any protective coating. This prevents trapping moisture under the sealant or stain.
Step 7 (Optional): Re-Stain or Re-Seal
🖌️ Only needed every 3-5 years, depending on exposure
- If your cedar looks faded or water no longer beads on the surface, apply a UV-resistant wood stain or clear sealer.
- Always test a small area first.
🔁 Reapply Stain Every 3–5 Years
Depending on sun exposure, weather conditions, and geographic location, reapplying the acrylic stain every few years will maintain protection and color consistency.
What Happens If You Skip Maintenance?
Cedar is a natural material, and without upkeep, it can become dry, gray, and susceptible to cracking. Proactive maintenance ensures your home continues to look polished and extends the life of your investment.

Let’s Keep It Looking Beautiful

HERS® (Home Energy Rating System) INDEX
*Based on the US Department of Energy definition of HERS index of 130. This information presented for educational purposes only. Savings are average estimates based on Jagoe Homes’ top five selling plans. Savings will vary based on house type, orientation, house size, utility rates, climate and operations of the home.
The lower a home scores on RESNET’S HERS (Home Energy Rating) Index, the more energy efficient it is. A standard new home that’s built to meet the 2006 IECC will score a HERS Index of 100. New Jagoe homes score an average of 62, making them at least 38% more efficient than a standard new home and at least 68% more efficient than a used home.
Brand-new Jagoe homes are built with nothing less than advanced materials and modern innovations engineered to reduce energy use and lower utility costs all year long. Owning a home designed with energy-saving features ensures long-lasting efficiency, exceptional comfort, and an eco-friendly carbon footprint throughout every season.
